Our recent snow storm aside, we’ve had a pretty mild winter here in northern Nevada. And as we move through March and into early spring, many people start thinking about their outdoor spaces. If you’re one of them, here are five questions to ask before you hire a Nevada landscape company. But before you do that, here’s the question you need to ask yourself first.
What Kind of Work Do I Want Performed?
Before you can find the right company for your project, you should be very clear on your landscape needs and desires. Are you looking for a maintenance company, one that will come in for spring clean up, to maintain your lawn, and to keep shrubbery and plants in great shape? Or are you looking to have a landscape construction project completed – a new gazebo, patio cover, pond, rock wall or other hardscape feature, etc.?
While there are many landscaping companies in northern Nevada, a big majority of them don’t have the resources necessary to design and execute a landscape construction project from scratch. Determining exactly what you need will save you time and aggravation by ensuring you go directly to the companies that can perform the kind of work you want. Once you find them, here are the questions to ask.
1. How long have you been in business?
When a landscape construction company has been around for years, that alone speaks volumes. Not only does the company have the benefit of all those years of experience, it means they have the manpower and skill set to stay successful. Plus, a company that’s been around for a while has a track record right here in town, so don’t hesitate to ask for referrals and examples of previous work. A long-running landscaping company is also likely to have a functional website and an actual office, two features that point to professionalism and credibility.
2. Is your company bonded and insured?
Anyone who performs work in and around your home should be bonded and insured. It’s the kind of thing that offers protections both to the company’s employees and you. This is especially true for landscaping companies, whose employees may be operating machinery on your property. Ask for specific licenses right up front, and make sure that anyone you consider has the right licenses for the kind of work you want performed.
3. Do you have specialists on staff?
If your project involves anything beyond plant installing, it’s a good idea to ask about specialists. From masonry for the rock in that new outdoor kitchen to paver and patio cover installation, you’ll want to know that professionals are doing the work.
4. Will you be involved in the project until it’s complete?
It’s not uncommon for landscape construction companies to have multiple projects running, so ask for a timeline of work. It’s frustrating to have a project seem half-finished if you weren’t informed about the project’s schedule, so ask about other projects and how those might affect your job.
5. Do you offer a guarantee on your work?
Reputable landscaping construction companies will offer separate guarantees on their installation and any plants that are put it. Work should be guaranteed for a minimum length of time, so make sure to ask.
