Unless you’re thinking about shoveling snow, landscaping likely isn’t top of mind here in Reno and Sparks. But landscaping experts will tell you that this is a great time of year to start planning for upcoming projects, especially if you’ll require the services of a licensed and qualified landscape construction company. As we watch the forecast for more snow, here’s a little inspiration: the eight landscaping trends predicted for 2024.
2024 Landscape Trend Predictions
Outdoor trends aren’t like interior trends. They tend to evolve instead of changing dramatically from one year to the next. Here’s what experts are predicting for landscape projects installed in 2024.
- A greater focus on sustainability. The importance of living sustainably is beginning to sink in for many people, and you’ll likely see it embraced outside as well. Sustainable landscaping generally means focusing on native plantings instead of bringing in high-maintenance plants brought in from other climates that require extensive care beyond what happens locally, like more watering, more shade, cooler temperatures, etc.
- More outdoor living. We’re fortunate to enjoy wonderful weather for much of the year here in northern Nevada, and outdoor landscapes designed to maximize that enjoyment are going to continue being incredibly popular. Beyond expansive patios with outdoor dining tables, outdoor living means creating dedicated spaces for lounging and socializing, complete with upgrades like fire pits, patio covers and pergolas, even outdoor kitchens.
- Smart tech. Technology is designed to make our lives easier, and you’ll find it outdoors more often in 2024. Beyond rain-sensing automatic irrigation, look for smart tech like wifi-enabled outdoor lighting, apps for your outdoor accessories, even remote-controlled lawnmowers.
- More low-maintenance plants. Aligning with sustainability, low-maintenance plantings like ornamental grasses and evergreen shrubs mean a charming aesthetic without intensive maintenance needs.
- More edimental plantings. Plantings designed to add color and texture that double as fresh produce for your kitchen are another trend we’ll see in 2024. Herbs and veggies like kale, asparagus and cabbage bring ornamental liveliness to outdoor spaces, are relatively low-maintenance, and work in smaller spaces. Plus, you’ll enjoy the literal fruits of your labor!
- More color. One twist to 2024 trends? Installed plantings of moodier and bolder plant colors. It makes for an interesting juxtaposition—think dark purples bringing a dramatic backdrop to brighter pops of yellows and oranges.
- A focus on attracting pollinators. As bees and butterflies experience greater threat than ever before, mindfully cultivating for these pollinators creates a safe haven.
- Using vertical space. Going up and not out will continue its popularity in 2024. Vertical planters and trellises extend color and texture upward instead of taking up limited ground space and help create the feel of hidden sanctuaries.
